The Best Book for children
The Bible is the best book for our children
Having said that, the best of Bibles will eventually just sit on a dusty shelf if our children don’t see us reading our own Bibles enthusiastically, and joyfully.
When we think about the generation we live in now - its too virtual a world. We get very busy, and to get away with the ear-bursting noise of our kids: smartphones and TVs , we thought are the best to keep them quiet.
I often wonder if and how the future of our children be?
What if they will get to see the changes in the next fifty years of life on earth? The changes that may confuse them to question more on their identity, their faith, their culture and their thoughts.
What if they will be flying Autobots or go for a picnic to Mars? But would eventually have no idea of their own culture and traditions.
Living in a mixed community, my son has been exposed to many language and although I like the fact that my son is growing up to be multi-lingual. I have always been very worried about his mastery over our native dialect. He is six years already and although it is not going to be an over-night success, I have been making a regular habit of reading the Word from our "Ntho Motsu" (The Holy Bible).
When I started this , I began to see the tremendous improvement even in the usage of the vocabulary in our daily conversation.
My goal was to inculcate the habit of reading the holy word of God and to engrave it in the tablet of his heart. I started with Proverbs and is still half way through. Than I realised that the Holy Spirit works in different ways, he soon began to pick up the pace of reciting the verses while playing and would ask me to read along with him while am cooking or washing.
Now he thinks reading "Pungno Kako" (Proverbs) is fun and enjoyable. It is not easy to let them adapt this habit at one go as kids attention spans are lesser than 20 minutes. But we started with five minutes and slowly increased the mediation time. I believe most of us doting parents would be doing this.
Everyday is a beautiful time God has been giving us to build the foundation of the future we envision in the next few years.
As a doting mother, I thought sharing this might cross someone's mind out there and would agree to the opinion as mine.
Let us remember that like us, our kids are also going to meet failure. They’ll forget to read and pretend they’ve read. They’ll be lethargic and lazy. They might want to give up. But let's encourage them not to give up. Give them grace!
